A collection of songs exploring our interconnectedness with the natural world, intertwining folk-inspired harmonies, ambient electronics and atmospheric sounds made with plants in the Eden Project’s Rainforest Biome. Created as part of Alice Boyd’s artist residency at the Eden Project, this limited edition vinyl tells the story of civilisation at a tipping point.

Product Details

In 2021, Alice spent a week in the Rainforest Biome with her hand-crafted Arduino device recording plant conductivity data, which fluctuates as water moves around the leaves. She ‘sonified’ this into music, using synthesisers to voice variations in the data. This plant music is the foundation of the EP, appearing as the opening electronic bed in ‘Separation’ and intricate melodies heard on later tracks.

Since Alice’s residency, she has performed ‘From The Understory’ in the Eden Project’s Rainforest Biome, and has been featured on BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 3’s ‘Secrets of the Scottish Rainforest’.

‘From The Understory’ has been pressed onto Eco-Mix vinyl, which uses leftover coloured pellets from other vinyl runs. This produces a unique look and colour for each vinyl, cutting down on waste and making each record individual. The colour you receive will be a lucky dip, and can range from sea green to ruby red.
