A native perennial with beautiful white flowers that contains precursors of salicylic acid – the anti-inflammatory compound aspirin was originally made from.

Meadowsweet may be best known for its association with aspirin, but from a herbalist’s point of view it is its beneficial effects on digestion for which it is most highly prized.

It is a relatively common plant in the UK; it thrives in damp places and is often found growing alongside river banks or roadside ditches, lighting up the roadways at the end of summer. Its affinity for dampness makes it a good herb to grow in heavy clay soils, although it does seem to tolerate most soil types. It can grow in full sunshine or partial shade.

Harvest the blossoms and leaves on a sunny day when they come into flower in mid-summer.

Sowing and growing :

Meadowsweet is a herb that benefits from some stratification to break the seed’s dormancy. This can be done in two ways; either you sow seed directly outdoors in the autumn or cold-moist stratify for 3-4 weeks before sowing indoors in the Spring. Sow on the surface as the seeds require light to germinate, and keep the soil moist. In our experience, stratified meadowsweet normally germinates within a couple of weeks.

Uses and benefits:

Meadowsweet was one of the three herbs held most sacred to the Druids (vervain and water-mint being the other two). It’s still deeply respected by herbalists as it has such as profoundly beneficial effect on digestion. However, it is also known for two things; one for containing precursors to salicylic acid from which Aspirin was synthesised, and the other for giving its name to Aspirin, the most widely used drug ever made. Its previous Latin name was Spirea ulmaria – bringing the ‘’-spri-’ to ’Aspirin’. In the body, these salicylate precursors are metabolised to release small amounts of salicylic acid, which has a well-known anti-inflammatory effect. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a synthetic elaboration of this compound.

Harvest:

Harvest meadowsweet blossoms and leaves when they come into flower mid-Summer. Avoid any mildewy or damaged leaves and too much stem.

Dry on drying racks in a drier overnight or leave in a well-ventilated and warm place then store in an airtight container.

For items dispatched directly by Eden Project UK standard delivery on all products is £4.75* and free delivery for orders over £50.

Many items dispatched directly by our brands qualify for free delivery*.

As a charity we set our postage charges according to our courier and have to pass on any additional charges. Delivery times

Most products are dispatched within 1-3 working days of receiving the order. We'll let you know by email when your order has been dispatched.

After dispatching, your order will normally reach you within 1-3 working days. It may take a little longer in busy periods.

For products dispatched directly from our suppliers, please refer to the 'Delivery & Returns' tab on each product page, where we provide the estimated delivery times.

Why we dispatch some products directly from our suppliers

To reduce the products' carbon footprint and to offer you a wider selection of products, we have a number of brands/suppliers dispatching directly to you from their warehouses.

Please see the "Delivery & Returns" tab on each product where we specify if a product is sent directly by Eden Project or from a supplier.

If you receive goods that do not match those that you ordered, please notify us within 14 days of receipt to return them. For all enquiries please call 01726 818891 or e-mail us: webshop@edenproject.com.

To be eligible for a return, items must be in its original packaging, in the same condition that you received your order, unworn or unused, with tags. This does not apply to faulty items.

Items that were delivered directly from our suppliers will be returned to them. Once they receive the item(s) and verify their condition Eden Project will process a refund.

Stock availability

If for unforeseen reasons an item in your order is unavailable, we will contact you using the details you have given us to arrange an alternative product of similar quality or price. Naturally, if you choose to cancel the order, we will give you a full refund for the unavailable item.

Packing of products

We use recycled packaging where we can, and also re-use surplus boxes from here on site whenever possible. We always take care to ensure that the packages we send reach you in perfect condition and are a delight to open!

How to return an item

You can return an item within 14 days of receipt. As some of our products are dispatched directly by our brands, please contact us before returning any item(s) so we can provide you with the exact address on where to send them back.

Unless an item is faulty, you're responsible for the postage charges to return the item.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging.

If there were any shipping charges at the time of placing an order they will not be refunded unless the item is faulty.

Made to order or personalised products are not refundable.

Free UK standard delivery on all orders* over £50 for products dispatched directly by Eden Project (*Some exceptions apply).
