The story of the Eden Project is the story of a worked-out mine that was transformed into something incredible.

And it’s not the only one.

When mines and quarries close, they shouldn’t become scars on the landscape or sources of pollution or leave their working communities on the brink of collapse. With imagination and determination, they can offer something radically different — hope.

102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground takes the reader on a tour of some of the world’s best and most unusual ways of dealing with former mining and associated industrial sites, including carbon-capturing mine wastes, a brewery, a cake mine, an opera house, racecourses and golf courses, ski slopes, vineyards, reconstructed ecosystems, a digital archive inside the Arctic Circle, and the Eden Project itself.

Available for delivery in the UK. For international orders please email 102@edenproject.com to receive further details.

      Excellent, well-researched and interesting!

I love the subject of 102 (there's actually a few more) things to do with a hole in the ground! There is so much to learn and it covers so many parts of the globe. This would be a great book for someone with an interest in the world and who loves technical matter but it's written in an accessible style. Well done to the authors for creating this book and bringing a unique and fascinating area to the general public.

      Interesting, but not spectacular.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the book for this price

Contains some interesting ideas, and it's good to see something constructive is being done with old mines.

Feel rather conflicted about some of the bodies involved in the creating book (e.g. mining companies), and just hope they're not getting any of the proceeds.

      Some great photos!

Thanks for your review Dyane – we’re really pleased you like the book!

102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground was supported by several organisations, including mining companies and NGOs. None of these organisations will receive any share of the profits, but the funding they provided enabled us to produce a longer and higher quality book and subsidised the cost of production to make it more affordable. The Eden Project had full editorial control throughout. The book aims to raise people’s expectations for mining legacy sites and help the communities and industries around them shape a better future.
