Insect hotels can support a variety of bugs in your garden, including bees, ladybirds, and lacewings, helping to pollinate plants and boost biodiversity. This attractive hotel is made of WoodStone®, an innovative, breathable, and durable blend of concrete and FSC®-certified wood fibres. The bamboo tubes inside can be replaced over time, allowing insects to nest again and again.

Solitary bees such as mason and leafcutter bees will be the most likely guests at your insect hotel, along with solitary wasps. After collecting enough pollen in the tubes or holes, they will lay their eggs and cover them with more pollen. Once the eggs hatch, the pollen provides food for young bees as they prepare to leave the hotel.

The salina insect hotel should be placed in a sunny area of your garden or outdoor space near pollen-rich flowering plants, so bees and other bugs can easily access it. The hotel can be mounted on a wall or fence using the metal hook provided. Protect your insect hotel and its residents in autumn and winter by putting it in a shed or under cover out of the rain.

To keep your salina bee & insect hotel cosy and welcoming, we recommend replacing the nesting tubes every 1-2 years. Swapping out the old tubes helps prevent the build-up of bacteria, which can be harmful to our tiny garden visitors. By doing this, you'll continue to support the biodiversity in your garden and ensure your insect friends have a safe, clean place to call home.

About the brand
CJ Wildlife

Founded in 1987 on a farm in rural Shropshire by cousins Chris and Ben Whittles, CJ Wildlife is proud to be the market-leading manufacturer and distributor of foods, feeders, and nest boxes for garden wildlife in the UK.

Thanks to extensive research led by their wildlife experts, the range of bird food on the market in the UK has significantly increased since CJ Wildlife was founded more than 35 years ago. Today, over 80 bird species are being fed in gardens, compared to just 18 when they started their company!

Sustainability

Sustainability

As a company committed to preserving wildlife it should not be a surprise that CJ Wildlife are also extremely passionate about protecting the wider environment. Please read below for more information on some of their initiatives.

1. Supporting green partners

Every year CJ Wildlife provide income to their green partners across Europe to enable them to carry out vital conservation work. This work includes mass tree planting initiatives, native wildflower planting and general habitat restoration. It also includes feeding and habitat support for endangered species (such as dormice and red squirrels).

2. Sustainable resources

CJ Wildlife opt to purchase sustainable materials wherever they can. This includes their commitment to purchasing FSC-certified woods and papers, flower seeds that are SKAL certified and perennial plants that are ‘On the way to Planet Proof’ certified.  For more information, please follow the links below:

They are also passionate believers in the circular economy philosophy which involves reusing, repairing and recycling existing products and their components for as long as possible. As an example, much of their office furniture is sourced from second-hand sources.

3. CO2 reduction

CJ Wildlife are currently working with an independent company to measure and understand their CO2 footprint – and from this setting and publishing targets for reduction. In the meantime, they are already installing smart meters and automated lights across their company. They harness solar power on some sites and are looking to extend this. They also minimize transportation movements by producing and storing inventory close to most of their customers.

4. Smarter, greener packaging

CJ Wildlife are working hard to reduce the amount of single use plastic in their business. This will become apparent if you regularly buy from them. For example, this year they are changing their peanut butter lids from brown to grey as this includes less carbon and so are far easier to recycle.

5. Moving from printing on paper to digital distribution

More and more of CJ Wildlife’s communications are sent digitally instead of printed and posted. Where they do still print, they think hard about the added value it brings in each case and they work with companies that use environmentally conscious printing techniques and FSC-certified paper.

7. Staff-led sustainability team

CJ Wildlife’s entire company is committed to making their business as sustainable as possible. In addition to full senior management team support, they have a grass-roots team of volunteers called ‘green heroes’ that are responsible for generating new ideas and then championing them within the wider business. All staff are welcome to join and so they have volunteers across several locations and from multiple departments – this leads to a healthy mix of experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm.
