Sustainability

Sustainability

House of Dorchester is committed to creating delicious, high-quality chocolates while supporting a more sustainable future for cocoa farming communities. As a partner of the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and promoting responsible farming practices, House of Dorchester sources its cocoa beans from West Africa through a programme focused on social and environmental progress.

Through this partnership, House of Dorchester supports initiatives that aim to improve cocoa production, strengthen local communities and help reduce poverty. A proportion of the premium contributed to the Cocoa Horizons Foundation is invested in programmes designed to improve farmers’ wellbeing and livelihoods over the long term, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and resources needed to build more sustainable futures.

Supporting cocoa farmers and their communities

Cocoa Horizons works closely with cocoa farmers to encourage responsible agricultural practices and improve the quality and productivity of their crops. Through coaching, practical training and access to improved equipment and planting materials, farmers can develop their skills, enhance their farming methods and produce better-quality cocoa beans.

The programme also helps farmers create individual farm business plans, access financing solutions and diversify their sources of income. These initiatives aim to provide greater economic stability, enabling farming families to invest in their land, support their children's education and improve their standard of living.

Through its Cocoa Horizons Academy, the foundation provides training delivered by accredited coaches, helping farmers develop knowledge that can be passed on to future generations. In the previous year reported by House of Dorchester, more than 210,000 farmers graduated from the academy, progressing towards more personalised coaching and continued development.

Empowering women in cocoa farming

Supporting women and promoting greater financial independence are important elements of the Cocoa Horizons programme. Women in cocoa-growing communities receive training in sustainable farming techniques, crop cultivation and financial management, helping them develop their own income-generating opportunities.

The programme also supports Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), which help women access financial resources, build confidence and strengthen their economic independence. By encouraging women to develop their farming skills and manage their finances, these initiatives contribute to more resilient households and stronger communities.

Protecting children and improving access to education

House of Dorchester's partnership with Cocoa Horizons also supports initiatives that promote child protection and access to education in cocoa-growing communities. The foundation distributes school kits to families to help children attend school and supports awareness activities in remote villages.

Through community visits and educational events, the programme raises awareness of child protection while providing opportunities for learning and access to information, including medical advice. These initiatives aim to help create safer, healthier environments in which children can learn and develop.

Caring for the environment

Alongside its commitment to supporting farming communities, Cocoa Horizons promotes initiatives designed to protect the natural environment and preserve local landscapes. These include planting new shade trees and supporting forest restoration projects, helping to encourage more environmentally responsible farming practices.

By working with farmers to improve cultivation methods and promote sustainable land management, the programme aims to support cocoa production while protecting the ecosystems on which farming communities depend.

Transparency and accountability

House of Dorchester recognises the importance of transparency and accountability throughout the cocoa production process. The Cocoa Horizons Foundation's activities and the distribution of programme premiums are audited annually by an independent third party, helping to support responsible management and oversight.

Through this partnership, House of Dorchester is committed to supporting sustainably sourced cocoa and contributing to initiatives that promote better farming practices, improved livelihoods and stronger communities.

By combining its heritage of chocolate craftsmanship with a commitment to responsible sourcing, House of Dorchester continues to support a more sustainable approach to cocoa production, helping to create a positive impact for farmers, their families and the environment.
